Zegna Su Misura FW26 brings a new idea of luxury: A suit that lives through generations

The story of a made-to-measure suit usually starts simply: a tailor takes measurements, a fabric is chosen, and then a garment tailored to one man is created. Zegna turns this story upside down in the Su Misura FW26 collection. It all starts with a piece that already has its own history. Global ambassador Mads Mikkelsen comes to the tailor with a jacket he already owns and asks for it to be tailored for his son. The fitting is no longer the beginning of the process, but its continuation.

It is at this moment that the main idea of the collection lies. Su Misura can talk about the approach, the numerous customization options, the choice of linings, buttons and finishing details that make each piece unique. But this time Zegna focuses on what happens much later, after the final fitting.

The garment then ceases to be just something ordered by one man and becomes something that can be taken over by someone else.

Zegna describes this idea with the concept of the family wardrobe. Exceptional pieces are worn, kept and passed on over time. The logic is familiar to anyone who has ever peeked into their father’s closet. The clothes that last the longest aren't necessarily those bought for a specific moment, but those made with enough thought to outlast the circumstances that created them. At the same time, they have to have enough character to make someone else want to keep them. Although a made-to-measure jacket is tailored to one man's shoulders, its value doesn't end there.

A similar principle has long existed in the world of watches. A mechanical watch is one of the few objects that is traditionally passed down from one generation to the next. Its mechanisms can be serviced, cases acquire character over time, and it goes without saying that the first owner will not necessarily be the last. Clothes rarely get the chance to have that kind of durability, as they are usually designed to be replaced. Su Misura is one of the places in men's fashion where this idea works, with an added speciality: the suit is shaped to a specific body from the very beginning. This makes the moment when a garment is passed on to another family member even more personal.

At the heart of Su Misura are three pieces that represent this idea of time particularly well. The Trofeo comes from the Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Mill, where it was created in 1965. It is made from superfine merino wool from Australia, and its speciality is the balance between softness to the touch and resistance when worn. Sixty years later, it behaves in the same way, which is a real testament to the durability of the fabric.

Abito #1 takes us even further back in time. Inspired by the founder’s suits from the 1930s, it is made from 100% Australian wool and is recognized as the first Zegna suit. The Falcon Jacket begins its story in the Oasis Zegna, a hundred square kilometers of space in the Italian Alps that embodies the values of the house. Its inspiration is linked to the falcon, an animal that has become the symbol of Zegna, as well as the ability to see beyond what is immediately in front of us, a trait that the founder admired.

Such pieces are usually presented as a reason to buy them. In Su Misuri FW26, their role is seen differently: they become a reason to keep them.

An important part of the story belongs to the tailor himself. Throughout his career, he has watched men stand in front of the mirror just before life-changing moments. Before a proposal, a speech, or fatherhood. In these situations, a brief silence occurs during which a man begins to see himself in a different light. That moment is the space of his craft.

As he goes through each step of the alteration, the tailor thinks about what his job actually requires. People often think, he concludes, that tailoring is primarily about the fabric. But the key lies in the quarter inch, the position of the shoulder, and the way the lapel falls. Hours of work are invested in a single seam not so that the wearer will notice it, but so that they will feel it, even if they cannot explain why the suit fits them so well. It all comes back to one thought: his job is not just to design a beautiful suit, but to design shoulders that will carry a great life.

The phrase “A man in a suit thinks differently” may at first glance sound like a statement about how a man in a suit is perceived by others. In the context of a tailor’s story, it takes on a different meaning. The suit does not change the room’s opinion of the man who enters it, but rather his own attitude towards what follows. A person who has dressed for an important moment recognizes this feeling, even if he has not previously been able to express it in words.

Along with this story comes La Mania del Sarto, a more detailed look into the world of the tailor, his objects, rituals and the small, accumulated habits that shape the daily life of a tailor’s workshop. Its arrival is logical because the entire story of Su Misura FW26 is actually focused on time: the time it takes to make, the time spent wearing it and the time that passes before the garment is passed on to someone else.

Garments like these are almost always shown at the moment when they look their best – when they are new and perfect. Su Misura FW26 opts for the opposite approach. The jacket is most valuable here precisely because it has already been worn. Its value is not measured by one season, but by a period much longer than that. A man comes to a tailor to have his jacket tailored for his son, and what that act represents does not need to be said out loud.

It does not need to.
