Rolex Celebrates 100 Years of the Oyster Case with the Major “Oyster Story” Exhibition in Shanghai

To mark the centenary of the Oyster case, Rolex has opened a major exhibition in Shanghai titled “Oyster Story,” dedicated to one of the most significant achievements in watchmaking history. Running from June 10 to June 28, 2026, the exhibition is hosted at the West Bund Dome Art Center, a former industrial site on the banks of the Huangpu River that has since become part of the city’s cultural and artistic district. Spanning nearly 100,000 square feet, the venue provides an expansive setting for presenting the history of the brand and the evolution of its iconic Oyster model.

The exhibition traces the journey that began with Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, whose vision led to the creation of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch. Visitors are invited to explore how the Oyster evolved from a technical breakthrough into one of the most recognizable symbols of modern watchmaking. Through historical timepieces, contemporary models, and extensive archival material, the exhibition illustrates the development of a concept that has shaped Rolex’s identity for the past century.

At the heart of the display is the Oyster itself and its transformation over the last 100 years. Rare historical watches, collectible pieces, and current models are brought together to showcase the technical and aesthetic progression of the collection. The exhibition also includes timepieces from private collections, along with several exhibits being presented to the public for the first time.

On the upper level, a dedicated gallery highlights one hundred notable individuals who have worn Rolex watches throughout the years. Alongside their portraits are historical and contemporary timepieces connected to their stories. This section emphasizes the brand’s relationship with a wide range of fields, from sport and exploration to culture and science.

A special area titled “Superlative” focuses on the technical aspects of Rolex manufacturing. Visitors can gain insight into the construction of cases, bracelets, dials, movements, and materials, as well as the processes involved in creating the watches. The exhibition also presents the latest version of Rolex’s “Superlative Chronometer” certification, underlining the brand’s standards of precision and reliability.

In addition to the exhibition galleries, the venue features a screening room, a reading and relaxation area, and multimedia installations that connect the technical features of Rolex watches with the brand’s ambassadors and areas of involvement. Large digital displays positioned throughout the space further expand the story of the Oyster and its role in Rolex’s history.

“Oyster Story” is conceived as a comprehensive celebration of a century of innovation, technical achievement, and human accomplishment linked to Rolex’s most famous case design. Through a combination of rare watches, historical artifacts, and interactive experiences, the exhibition demonstrates how the Oyster became the foundation of the brand’s modern reputation and how its legacy continues to evolve today.
