The origin of this cocktail is rather obscure, with several theories about its origin. One popular belief is that the cocktail is named after a British naval surgeon, Sir Thomas Gimlette, who allegedly introduced the drink as a way to get sailors to consume lime juice, which was key to preventing scurvy. This mixture of gin and lime juice became a staple on naval voyages in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Another theory suggests that the drink's name is derived from a tool called a gimlet, which is used to drill small holes. The sharp and penetrating taste of the cocktail could have led to this association, but one thing is clear. Regardless of its true origins, the Gimlet has secured its place in cocktail history.

The classic Gimlet is incredibly easy to prepare, requiring only two to three ingredients:

  1. 60 ml of gin

2. 30 ml of fresh lime juice

3. 22 ml simple syrup - 1:1 water and sugar. This is optional and more for those who prefer a slightly sweeter drink.

Preparation

Fill the shaker with ice. Add the gin, lime juice and simple syrup (if using) to a shaker. Shake well until the mix cools down. Strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass or glass with ice. Garnish with a wheel or a slice of lime, if desired.

Gimlet variations

Although the classic Gimlet is beloved for its simplicity, modern mixologists have put their stamp on this timeless drink, creating a variety of delightful variations:

  1. Vodka Gimlet: Replace gin with vodka for a smoother taste. This version became popular during the 1970s and remains a favorite among vodka lovers.

  2. Rose's Lime Juice Gimlet: Some traditionalists insist on using Rose's Lime Juice, a sweetened lime juice, instead of fresh lime juice and simple syrup. This version recalls the maritime roots of the cocktail.

  3. Herb Gimlet: Add some fresh herbs like basil or mint to a shaker for a refreshing and flavorful twist.

  4. Kraken Gimlet: Crush a few slices of cucumber in a shaker before adding the other ingredients for a crunchy and cool variation.

  5. Spiced Gimlet: Add a few drops of bitters or a splash of ginger syrup to add a layer of complexity and warmth.

The Gimlet has also appeared in literature and film, further cementing its status as a cultural icon. Perhaps the most famous reference is when Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlowe, preferred the Gimlet in the 1953 novel The Long Goodbye. Marlowe's approval of the drink added a touch of sophistication to the Gimlet, associating it with the world of old-fashioned detectives.

The cocktail is certainly a favorite among lovers of classic cocktails and those who appreciate simple but elegant flavors. It is often drunk by hedonists, gin lovers and anyone who enjoys historical drinks with a story. Also, due to its simple preparation and refreshing taste, it is an ideal choice for summer parties and relaxing evenings.

With its simple recipe and rich history, this cocktail is a great example of how simplicity can lead to lasting appeal. Whether you prefer the traditional gin version or a modern twist, the Gimlet offers a refreshing and versatile option for cocktail lovers. So the next time you're in the mood for a drink that's both classic and contemporary, consider the Gimlet – a cocktail that has truly stood the test of time.
