In the heart of central Croatia, located along the Kupa river, is the small town of Ozalj . Although it has only a few thousand inhabitants, this small town hides a wealth of history, culture and natural beauty that is definitely worth exploring. If you start from Zagreb, we definitely recommend that you drive on the local road through the villages of Klinča Sela, Jastrebarsko, Gornja Kupčina and Krašić - the native village of Alojzij Stepinc . Just 10 minutes from Krašić, through a thick oak forest, the town of Ozalj awaits you, just across the bridge of the Munjara power plant. Crossing that bridge has a spectacular view of the Ozalj castle on the right and the town's swimming pool and power plant on the left and leaves you breathless. We bring you a short guide of what we visited and which new hit place you must visit before the warm days are over.
Ozalj castle
On a hill above the Kupa River, this magnificent castle stands proudly, one of the most important symbols of this region. By the way, famous Croatian noble families such as Frankopan and Zrinski have lived in the Ozalj castle for centuries, and today it is recognizable for its historical importance and preserved appearance. This castle tells the story of the turbulent times of the Middle Ages, but also of later periods when it became an important center of cultural and political life. Inside the castle is the Ozalj Native Museum, where visitors can view numerous exhibitions about the history and life of this region, and particularly interesting collections related to noble families and numerous paintings by our painter Slava Raškaj. Although the museum is relatively small and an hour is enough for you to visit, skipping this mysterious place with a view of the whole of Ozalj would be a missed opportunity. The ticket price for adults is €3.

Munjara
Just a few hundred meters downstream from the castle is Munjara, the Ozalja hydroelectric power plant that was put into operation in 1908. Munjara Ozalj was one of the first hydroelectric power plants in Croatia and today it is in operation producing clean energy using the power of the Kupa River. The view of Munjara, with its arches and industrial architecture, evokes admiration especially because of its resemblance to a medieval castle. Munjara has even become part of local legend and identity. During its construction and the first years of operation, it became a symbol of progress and modernization for the town of Ozalj and the surrounding settlements. The power plant is also directly connected to the majority of noble families from Ozalj, such as the Zrinskis and the Frankopans, who had an influence on the development of this area and on the industrial revolution that followed centuries later. The construction of the hydroelectric power plant in Ozlje was one of the key steps in the industrialization of that region.

City swimming pool
After visiting the historical sights, it is best to refresh yourself at the town's swimming pool located along the Kupa River, just a few minutes' walk from Munjara. Right next to the river is a large parking lot in nature, which is mostly in the shade. Leave your car in the forest and head to the beach of this favorite meeting place of locals and visitors. If you are not used to swimming in the river, don't expect crystal clear water because it is a natural environment after all. Swimming in Kupa, a picnic on the shore or just a walk along the river are ideal activities for every visitor and provide the perfect place to escape from everyday stress. The city swimming pool also offers sports activities such as kayaking and beach volleyball, so lovers of active vacations will also find their place under the sun.

Snackhouse Oz
One of the main reasons why we "moved" from Zagreb is because of the recently opened Snackhouse Oz, which represents a true refreshment in Ozalj's offer and has quickly become a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. The restaurant/bar offers a modern and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for an escape from Zagreb, but it is also a place where you can enjoy a rich selection of food and drinks. It combines modern gastronomic trends with traditional flavors, creating combinations that are hard to resist.
Snackhouse Oz
Snackhouse Oz specializes in "quick" offerings. Their burgers, sandwiches and tortillas are prepared from high-quality ingredients, and they pay special attention to freshness. Every bite exudes careful preparation and a combination of flavors that is both familiar and yet special. Especially popular is the "Rocket burger", which represents the classic burger we are all used to with a modern twist .

Of the other dishes, we tried almost everything on the menu and we highly recommend the Mini Chicken Fahitas, Crunchy salad and their fries with Aurora sauce.

The outdoor and only space is perfect for family meals, but also for hanging out with friends. Interesting interior decoration, wooden details and modern lighting create a sense of comfort and invite you to cool refreshment after swimming in Kupa. Their spacious terrace is ideal for sunny days, offering a view of the city center and the nature surrounding Ozalj.
In addition to excellent food, the restaurant also offers a wide range of drinks. Beers from the Zagreb Brewery, wines, homemade brandies and cocktails are a special asset of this restaurant. Guests can enjoy wine tasting from the surrounding vineyards or taste craft beers that are increasingly popular on the Croatian scene. In addition to alcoholic beverages, there is also a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages ideal for refreshment during summer days.
Ozalj is a true gem of continental Croatia, an ideal place for a one-day trip but also for a longer stay for those who want to enjoy history, nature and local gastronomy. From the castle and Munjara to relaxing by the river and enjoying the newly opened Snackhouse Oz, this small town offers a wealth of experiences for every visitor.
