In this #CigarTalk, we take a slightly different turn and look at the world of cigars through completely fresh eyes. This time, we sit down with a “cigar rookie”, someone who is only just stepping into the culture, still learning the rituals, the language, and what actually makes the experience enjoyable.
Could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
Miha Rudl: Hi, my name is Miha Rudl and I am 32 years old. I enjoy traveling, especially discovering new places and cultures, spending time by the seaside whenever I get the chance, and smoking cigars as part of a relaxed, mindful ritual. I also value good company, as I believe the best moments are always shared and shaped by the people around you.
His journey with cigars began a little more than three years ago, when his father first introduced him to the world of cigars. What started as a simple moment of sharing quickly turned into a deeper curiosity about the culture, rituals, and craftsmanship behind it. Over time, that initial introduction evolved into a growing interest, as he began to explore different cigars, learn about their origins, and understand the nuances that define the experience beyond just smoking.
Do you have preferred cigar vitolas for smoking?
“My favorite vitolas are robusto and petit corona.” - Miha Rudl
When asked how he pairs cigars with drinks such as whiskey, champagne, wine, or coffee, he explains that it largely depends on the moment and on the cigar he chooses. There is no fixed rule for him, but rather a sense of rhythm that follows the time of day and the occasion. In the evenings and over the weekend, he prefers to pair cigars with a glass of whiskey or a Negroni, as he feels these richer, more complex flavours naturally complement the slower pace of those moments. During the day, however, he leans toward something simpler and more focused, often enjoying a cigar alongside a well-made espresso, which he sees as a natural pairing.
When it comes to food pairings, he believes certain desserts can work particularly well with cigars. He specifically highlights chocolate as a great complement, noting how its richness and subtle bitterness can align beautifully with the depth and character of a cigar, especially when enjoyed after a meal or in a more relaxed setting.
What trends are you currently seeing in the cigar industry?
Miha Rudl: What I see is that the prices of Cuban cigars are rapidly increasing because of higher demand by the consumers. The social media like Instagram has in my opinion expanded the number of cigar smokers.
Do you have a favorite cigar brand, and why that one?
Miha Rudl: That is a tough one. My favorite is Partagás, but I also really love Juan Lopez.
What cut do you most often use?
Miha Rudl: I mostly use straight cut. I prefer it for its consistency and control, as it provides a clean opening and ensures an even draw without overcomplicating the ritual. For me, it remains the most reliable and straightforward way to prepare a cigar.
Have you ever smoked a cigar that you particularly remember?
“The cigar I remember most is the first H. Upmann Half Corona, as it was the very first cigar I ever smoked. Have I smoked better cigars since then? Absolutely. But this one stands out the most, as it marks the beginning of my cigar journey.” - Miha Rudl
He believes that a mentor in the world of cigars is very important. While some basic knowledge and tips can certainly be found online today, he feels there is no real comparison to what a mentor can teach and demonstrate in person. For him, the value lies in the direct, hands-on guidance that only experience can provide.
A good mentor, he explains, can offer far more than just technical information, they can shape the way someone approaches cigars entirely. Beyond practical advice, they also share personal experiences, stories, and subtle insights that cannot be learned through reading alone. In his view, this human element is what truly accelerates learning and deepens appreciation for cigar culture.
What is the best cigar lounge you have visited?
Miha Rudl: Up to this point, I’ve only visited one cigar lounge in Zagreb, Havana 22, which in my opinion, is an excellent spot.
Could you recommend a good cigar under €10?
Miha Rudl: Well, I think this is a slightly complex question, as it largely depends on the market you’re buying cigars in. In Italy, for example, you can find Partagás or Romeo y Julieta Mille Fleurs for under €10. In Slovenia, however, prices are noticeably higher, and it’s difficult to find a good Cuban cigar below that price point. That said, if you’re open to New World cigars in Slovenia, there are some solid, more affordable options available. One that comes to mind is the Zino Nicaragua, a well-balanced cigar that’s also quite friendly on the wallet.
How important are a good cutter, lighter, and cigar case? Do you have any favorite brands?
Miha Rudl: They’re very important. My favorite cutter is the Elie Bleu Double Blade Cigar Cutter. As for lighters, I prefer the Les Fines Lames Le Feu RS, mainly because of its flat flame. The cigar case I use most often is the Les Fines Lames Duo Case, although I also like the newer model from Alestimo. It features a dedicated pocket for a Boveda pack, and its aluminum body offers solid protection if you accidentally sit on it.
Do you have any advice for someone just entering the world of cigars?
Miha Rudl: One piece of advice I’d share is the same one I received: try as many different cigars as you can. Explore options from Cuba, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and beyond. It’s the best way to discover what truly suits your palate in terms of flavor.
Thank you Miha for this lovely interview and best of luck in the future!
