For years, San Canzian Hotel & Residences has been recognized as one of Croatia’s most distinctive boutique destinations. Nestled in the heart of Istria, near the town of Buje, the property has built a reputation for offering guests far more than accommodation alone. It is now expanding that vision through a new artistic initiative, the San Canzian Art Collection, a program that places art at the center of the guest experience.
The concept is rooted in the idea of the hotel as a space where people, ideas, and creative processes can come together, generating cultural value that extends beyond hospitality. During the launch of the project, visitors had the opportunity to discover works by contemporary sculptors whose contributions have left a significant mark on Croatia’s art scene.
From the moment one enters the grounds, it becomes clear that art is not treated as a decorative addition but as an integral part of the property’s identity. Sculptures by renowned artist Alem Korkut were installed throughout the landscaped areas surrounding the hotel, creating a natural dialogue between the artworks and the Istrian landscape. Known for public sculptures such as Karijatida in Pazin and the Bicycle Monument in Koprivnica, Korkut’s works appeared as a seamless extension of their surroundings.

The program continued with an exhibition by young sculptor Matej Vuković, who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2021. His recognizable artistic language, characterized by cloud-inspired sculptures and biomorphic forms, introduced a different creative perspective while reflecting the project’s intention to connect established artists with emerging talents. Works by Siniša Majkus were also among the first pieces presented within the initiative, further emphasizing the desire to bring together a variety of artistic approaches and sensibilities.
At the heart of the San Canzian Art Collection are artist residencies that will take place throughout the year. The program includes two fully funded month-long residencies annually. One is intended for established and mid-career artists, while the other is designed to support younger talents by providing them with the time and space needed for artistic development.

Alongside the residency program, a series of exhibitions will be developed. Each year, the San Canzian estate will host a sculpture exhibition, with works displayed in direct interaction with the surrounding natural environment. Beginning in 2027, the program is expected to expand with an annual painting exhibition that will be held in a new residential and cultural complex currently under construction.
The residency model will allow artists to spend dedicated time creating at San Canzian, drawing inspiration from both the setting and the landscape. In this way, the hotel becomes a place of artistic production rather than merely a venue for presentation.

The initiative also demonstrates how the tourism and hospitality sectors can actively contribute to contemporary art, creating a framework in which culture and hospitality enrich one another.
The vision extends beyond the existing hotel grounds. A new complex is currently being developed and is set to become a key hub for future artistic activities. It will serve as a platform for artists participating in residency programs to showcase their work, while future exhibitions will continue to expand the growing collection.

Through the San Canzian Art Collection, the hotel reinforces its ambition to be more than a luxury retreat. Art becomes part of everyday life for guests, adding a new dimension where creativity, nature, and contemporary culture intersect. By supporting Croatian artists and providing them with opportunities to create and exhibit their work, San Canzian is developing a project that reaches beyond the traditional boundaries of hospitality and makes a lasting contribution to the cultural landscape.
