The D-Resort Hotel in Šibenik, Croatia has a breath-taking roof lounge with the view of the entire old city. When we found out they have a cigar bar, we just had to see it for ourselves. Even though the range is not extensive, ranging from just a couple cigar brands, all the big names such as Montecristo, Romeo&Julietta, Davidoff & Partagas were there. We decided for the Partagás 8-9-8, a celebrated Cuban cigar that stands out for its classic lonsdale shape, measuring 6 3/4 inches in length with a 43 ring gauge. This cigar is renowned for its exceptional construction and balanced flavor profile, making it a favorite among cigar aficionados. It derives its name from the way it is traditionally packed in boxes of 25, arranged in three layers of 8, 9, and 8 cigars.
The Partagás 8-9-8 boasts a colorado claro wrapper that is more silky than oily to the touch. It has a firm and even feel when lightly squeezed, indicating excellent construction. The cigar's appearance is elegant, with a seamless wrapper and a traditional triple cap. The cold draw reveals light wood notes.

Upon lighting, the initial third introduces smooth notes of cedar wood and earth tones. The smoke is light and almost ethereal, gradually building in intensity as the cigar progresses. The second third brings a robust array of flavors including classic Partagás spices, leather, and roasted coffee beans, with the smoke becoming denser and more flavorful. The final third culminates in an explosive mix of spices, with a hint of acidity balancing the overall profile. The cigar maintains a medium-bodied strength throughout, making it approachable yet satisfying.
The draw of the Partagás 8-9-8 is generally excellent, though some variability can occur. The burn is sharp and even, producing a firm and stable ash. The cigar produces voluminous smoke with a cool sensation on the tongue, enhancing the enjoyment of its rich flavors.

The Partagás 8-9-8 pairs beautifully with a classic Negroni cocktail, which consists of gin, vermouth, and Campari. The bitter and herbal notes of the Negroni complement the rich, earthy flavors of the cigar, while the sweetness from the vermouth enhances the cigar's underlying sweetness and spice. The cocktail's bold profile stands up well to the medium-bodied strength of the Partagás 8-9-8, creating a harmonious balance between the drink and the smoke. This pairing is perfect for a relaxed evening, offering a sophisticated and layered tasting experience that highlights the best qualities of both the cigar and the Negroni.
The Partagás 8-9-8 is a classic Cuban cigar that offers a refined and complex smoking experience. Its combination of excellent construction, balanced flavors, and elegant appearance make it a standout choice for both seasoned smokers and those new to Cuban cigars. Despite occasional draw issues, its consistent performance and rich flavor profile have earned it high praise and a loyal following. We give it a 8/10.
