In this exclusive interview, learn more about the inspiration behind Bell & Ross timepieces, what items Mr. Rosillo never leaves his home without and how does a watch inspired by cigars look like.

What inspired you to fuse aviation and watchmaking to create Bell & Ross? Was there a pivotal moment when you knew this was the path for you?

C: The fusion of aviation and watchmaking came naturally to us from the beginning, as both worlds share a deep commitment to precision, reliability, and functionality. My interest in horology was personal—I've always had a passion for watches, which began with a small collection of antique timepieces passed down from my grandfather. When we started Bell & Ross, we instinctively turned to military aviation, as it perfectly aligned with our idea of the "ideal" watch: an instrument built for a very specific purpose.

A pivotal moment came when we realized that aviation, and specifically military aviation, had a rich history of using timepieces as essential tools. We found inspiration in the role of the pilot, who relied on his watch for both navigation and timing during critical missions. This historical connection led us to focus on aviation as a primary design influence. What truly solidified this path was when we attended the Basel Watch Fair in 1994 and noticed the market was moving towards modern, colorful designs. While others were focused on trends, we knew we wanted to create something rooted in the precise, utilitarian world of aviation—a design philosophy that emphasized function over form. This was our defining moment, and it set us on the course we’ve followed ever since.

How did the idea for the BR-01 come about? How long did the process take from the initial concept to the finished product?

C: The BR-01 was inspired by a simple but ambitious idea: take the instrument panel of an aircraft cockpit and distill its essence into a wristwatch. We wanted something that didn’t just look different but also communicated a purpose-driven design ethos. The square case, the oversized numerals, and the minimalist layout all reflect this philosophy. From the first sketches to production, the process took nearly two years. Every detail was meticulously refined to ensure that it was not just a bold statement piece but also a functional tool.

Do you remember when you sold the first watch? What was the feeling?

C: Absolutely! It was exhilarating and humbling. There’s a unique satisfaction in seeing an idea materialize into something people admire and choose to own. That first sale validated our belief that there was room for innovation in watchmaking and a room for us and our particular DNA.

"Bell & Ross is renowned for its bold, square cases which is a direct nod to aviation instruments, predominantly square for practical reasons. This direction was bold yes, but it was also authentic to the DNA of the brand. For us, it wasn’t only about defying trends, it was about staying true to the inspiration." - Carlos Rosillo

How did you decide to go against the grain and create a square watch in a world dominated by round designs?

C: The square case was a direct nod to aviation instruments, which are predominantly square for practical reasons. It was bold, yes, but it was also authentic to the DNA of the brand. For us, it wasn’t only about defying trends, it was about staying true to the inspiration.

How do you envision the future of Bell & Ross? Are there new directions or technologies you’re excited to explore?

C: The future of Bell & Ross is about strengthening our core pillars while continuing to evolve. We are committed to expanding our international presence, while also maintaining the legacy of our iconic collections like the BR-03 and our best sellers such as the BR-05, ensuring we continue to meet our customers' expectations.

Since 2016, with the introduction of the BR-X1 Chronographe Tourbillon Saphir, we’ve also been growing our Haute Horlogerie collection, blending prestigious complications, technical performance, and our signature design codes. In 2024, we aim to take another step forward by increasing the number of manufactured timepieces. A key highlight of 2024 will be the use of ceramic in the BR-05 collection, alongside our new campaign "Black is the New Black," which reflects both our ongoing commitment to innovation and our timeless design philosophy.

Looking ahead to 2025, we will continue to push the boundaries of creativity and material selection. We’re excited to explore new materials and technological advancements just as we did in 2024, maintaining the balance between craftsmanship, performance, and aesthetic appeal. Our goal is to offer timepieces that not only meet the demands of the modern world but also inspire and challenge traditional watchmaking conventions while keeping our brand unique essence.

For someone who’s never owned a Bell & Ross watch, what would you say is the essence of the brand that they should understand?

C: The essence of Bell & Ross is encapsulated in three words: Functionality, Legibility, Precision and Reliability. Every design choice we make is guided by these principles. Our watches are not just timepieces; they are instruments crafted for professionals and enthusiasts who demand the best in both performance and design. If you value precision, craftsmanship, and a bold aesthetic, you’ll find a kindred spirit in Bell & Ross.

What’s something about the watchmaking process that most people would be surprised to learn, especially when it comes to creating a Bell & Ross timepiece?

C: One surprising aspect of the watchmaking process is how long it takes to perfect every detail, especially when it comes to color selection and prototyping. Bruno Belamich, our creative director, has a very clear vision for every timepiece, and every element down to the smallest detail, and it must align with that vision. This means we often go through multiple prototypes, testing different color combinations, finishes, and materials to ensure they work together flawlessly. Every shade needs to work in harmony with the materials, design, and intended purpose of the watch. The back-and-forth process can stretch over months or even a year, but it’s this dedication to perfection that ensures the final product is not just functional, but a true reflection of our brand’s standards.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you that might surprise them?

C: When I was younger, I was an avid stamp collector. There’s an incredible variety of themes and collections within philately, from historical figures to unique geographical features. I loved how stamps could tell a story in such a small space, much like how we approach watchmaking—where every detail, no matter how small, adds to the bigger picture. That passion for collecting and the appreciation of fine details has certainly influenced my approach to designing watches. Just as with stamps, watch collections offer a world of diversity and depth, where each piece holds its own story and significance. Today, I enjoy collecting beautiful and unique watches, each one representing a different era, craftsmanship, or design philosophy.

Which items do you never leave your house without?

C: Well of course, I never leave without my Bell & Ross watch. Depending on the day and occasion, I might choose the BR-05 in steel for a more casual look, the elegance of the BR-05 Gold for something refined, or the sleek and modern BR-05 Ceramic for a contemporary edge. For a lighter, more durable option, I’ll wear the BR-X5 in titanium. Each material and design serve a purpose, allowing me to adapt my style to the moment.

As a cigar enthusiast, what is it about cigars that you find so captivating?

C: Cigars represent a perfect balance of craft, tradition, and sensory experience. The process of selecting, cutting, and lighting a cigar is almost meditative. It’s about savoring time, much like the philosophy behind our watches. As far back as I can remember, my father and grandfather were cigar smokers. After a good meal, I would often see them enjoy their cigars. It was already a familiar world to me, with its distinct aroma, lifestyle, and gestures that I was accustomed to.

Cigars

During my studies, I took a wonderful trip to Mexico that deepened my enthusiasm for the world of cigars. I had the pleasure of meeting people with deep knowledge of cigars, especially the practice of smoking, who shared their wisdom with me. I had the opportunity to enjoy cigars in great company, and over time, I began to taste increasingly renowned cigars. It quickly became a habit, and this cigar culture grew within me, largely thanks to that trip. This appreciation for cigars, like the creation of a fine watch, is all about craftsmanship and taking the time to savor every moment.

Perfect cigar evening. Where, what cigar and with who?

C: I enjoy cigars from various regions, with a particular fondness for Cuban cigars, but also those from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Partagas offers some exceptional cigars, like the Lusitania, but I’m always on the lookout for new experiences, trying different cigars and brands. We’ve even had cigars made in Nicaragua under the Bell & Ross name, which are some of my favorites due to their unique taste.

My ideal cigar evening is spent in the countryside, outdoors, enjoying the peace and quiet. But I’m also lucky to have a cigar lounge at home, where I can enjoy a cigar indoors in comfort. I love smoking cigars with friends, whether they’re aficionados or not—there’s something special about sharing that experience. But I also cherish the moments when I smoke alone, enjoying the solitude and pairing a cigar with a good drink, like I did recently after a family brunch with a Partagas Double Corona and a homemade cocktail.

Cigars are more than just a pleasure; they’re an experience that connects to other aspects of life. We wanted to capture this in our BR-05 Chrono Edición Limitada, blending the worlds of cigars and watchmaking through a color scheme that evokes the rich tones of a fine cigar.

If you could enjoy a cigar with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

C: If I could enjoy a cigar with anyone, it would be my father and grandfather, who have both passed away. Cigars remind me of them and the moments we shared after meals, filled with conversation and connection. It would be a chance to honor their legacy, reflect, and relive those cherished memories together.

If you were to design a Bell & Ross watch inspired by your love for cigars, what would it look like?

C: We already crafted such a piece in 2022: the BR-05 Chrono Edición Limitada. It is the perfect homage to the art of cigars. This timepiece encapsulates the rich world of cigar culture while staying true to the Bell & Ross identity. The warm tobacco-inspired hues, with a sunburst brown dial reminiscent of finely aged leaves, were chosen to reflect the elegance and craftsmanship that cigars and luxury watches share.

The rose gold accents evoke the glowing ember of a cigar, while the chronograph function symbolizes the passage of time—so essential to the ritual of enjoying a fine cigar. The open case back reveals the intricate mechanics, much like a cigar unwrapped to reveal its complex construction. To make it truly special, the watch is paired with a brown leather strap inspired by cigar wrappers, giving it a tactile connection to its theme.
